REPORT OF VISIT TO TSUKUBA UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
I have an opportunity to spend 2 weeks at Tsukuba University hospital from 21 Jan to 30 Jan 2015. This hospital is a big and very modern hospital in Japan. This is also a teaching hospital of Tsukuba University.
My schedule is to participate with the activities of Surgery department, mostly with GI surgery department. Some main activities are follows:
-Joining the ward round every morning with doctors to visit patients in surgery department and also patients in ICU, HCU departments.
-Observing operations in the operation room: some operations I have observed likes: esophagectomy for esophageal cancer, Gastrectomy, laparoscopic colorectal resection, liver resection …
- Participating in conferences of GI surgery and HBP surgery department in afternoon, oncology conference and journal club.
The two week experience has given me many impressions. Many things I have learnt, some of them are:
- Patient care standards: Tsukuba university hospital has a very good patient care system. Both doctors and nurses are very active in helping patients before and after operation. We can see clearly patient’s satisfaction during their treatment in hospital. This is what we need to improve ourselves.
- Pain control for patients is very good. Anesthesiologist spent a lot of time preparing for patients. Epidural pain control is routine for all big operations. So patients are pain-free at postoperative and quickly recovered.
- Network system is very good and efficient to control and follow-up patient's data.
- Operation room are very well equipped and organized, given the extreme condition for surgeons and other staffs.
- Oncology conference is standard for scheduling cancer patients.
- Surgeons are very careful and strict in operation, especially in cancer patient.
On the other hand, I have made a presentation about Choray hospital and laparoscopic video operations at Choray hospital to doctors at GI surgery department. We have had a very good discussion together.
I also discussed with Dr Enomoto, chief of GI surgery department about future cooperation and the contents of next teleconferences. So the topics for the future teleconferences may be:
- Lectures on guidelines of GI and HBP cancers treatments
- Laparoscopic colorectal surgery for colorectal cancers
- Laparoscopic gastrectomy for gastric cancers
- Esophagectomy for esophageal cancers
- Patient care and preparation: pre and post operative procedures
- Pain control for operative patient (this will be presented by anesthesiologist)
On the weekend, we have also enjoyed the beautiful sightseeing at Tsukuba Mountain and the Tokyo visit leaded by Prof Akiyama and Dr. Koji Ishigami.
At last, I feel very happy to spend 2 weeks visiting Tsukuba university hospital. I did learn a lot of things. So I hope that we can continue this exchange program and teleconference to improve our relationship and better serve our patients.
I would like to sincerely thank Prof Akiyama and all of his staffs for his dedicated efforts in arranging this program. I would not forget to thank Prof Matsumura, Prof Ohkochi, Dr Enomoto, Dr Oda, Dr Kohno and other doctors and staffs at Surgery department for their hospitality and efficient helps during my stay in Japan.
